About Douglas Mapp
Douglas Mapp is a freelance double/electric bassist in the Philadelphia area. He is currently principal bassist of the Reading, Pennsylvania Symphony, Kennett Symphony, and Opera Delaware, and assistant principal bassist of the Delaware Symphony. He frequently substitutes with the Pennsylvania Ballet, Philly Pops, and Harrisburg Symphony.
As a substitute bassist with the
Philadelphia Orchestra, Mr. Mapp has performed in Philadelphia, throughout Europe, The Mann Center for the Performing Arts, and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.
He has performed under the baton of conductors such as of Ricardo Muti,
Wolfgang Swallich, Charles Dutiot, Klaus Tennsted, John Nelson, Andrew Litton.
He has accompanied many notable soloists including Itzak Perlman, Andre Watts, Van Cliburn, Denyce Graves, Andrea Bocelli, Bobbie McFerrin, Fredica von Stadt, and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Pinchas
Zukerman, Michele Cann.
An active chamber musician he has
performed, recorded, and toured with numerous ensembles including the Relâche Ensemble, the Orchestra of the S.E.M. Ensemble (in New York), Orchestra 2001, Network for New Music, Mendelssohn String Quartet, The Chamber Orchestra of
Philadelphia, and Harlem Chamber Players.
As a jazz musician he has performed with a wide variety of artists including Ernie Watts, Sean Jones, Monty Alexander, Randy Brecker, Valery Ponamarev, Doc Severenson, Bobbie McFerrin, The Tommy
Dorsey Band, Nelson Riddle Orchestra, Billy Eckstein, Ray Charles, Joe Sudler's Swing Machine, Jimmy Bruno, Ben Vereen, Vic Damone, Rosemary Clooney, James Moody, The Ed Vezinho Jim Ward Big Band, and Denis DiBlasio.
Mr. Mapp also performs with a wide variety of popular/Broadway entertainers and shows including the Earth Wind and Fire, Natalie Cole, Il Divo, The Pointer Sisters, Michael Feinstein, Frank Sinatra Jr., Bo Diddley, Donny McClurkin, Richard Smallwood, Boots Randolph, Gino
Vanelli, Joni Mitchell, Melba Moore, The Moody Blues, Melissa Manchester, Elton John, Patti Labelle, A Chorus Line, South Pacific, Into The Woods, Chicago, Mame, Hello Dolly, Cabaret, West Side Story, Grand Hotel, The Wiz, Mitzi Gaynor.
As an educator he is a Professor of Jazz Studies at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey. He has served on the faculties of The University of Delaware, The Community College of Philadelphia, The College of New Jersey, Cheyney University, University of the Arts, and
Millersville University.
His private students have gone on to study at the Juilliard School, Curtis Institute, Manhattan School of Music, The Peabody Conservatory, Temple University, West Chester University, Rutgers University, Rowan University, Berklee College of Music, The Coast Guard Academy, and the United States Army Band. His younger students continue to enjoy success in their regional orchestra auditions.
Mr. Mapp can be heard many recordings including featured performances on those by the Relâche Ensemble, The SEM Ensemble, Philip Glass, Jeff Majors, Lana Del Rey, The MATA Ensemble, and R Kelly.
Mr. Mapp is a past-president of the International Society of Bassists and
chaired the 2015 ISB convention hosted at the Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado.
